Tales of loss, and wine, and grapes....

Moondrop Grapes

Long, shiny treats!

Type of Fruit: Purple grape
Country of origin: USA

I completely admit that I was mesmerized by the shape and just had to try if they were any good.

When I think of unusual or "fancy" fruits I honestly don't really think of grapes. I was always just okay with them growing up, never really thought of myself as a grape person until I tasted my favorite variety of grape, the Cotton Candy Grape. That got me into trying other varieties, and a whole new world opened up before me!

And like fate, right as I was open to trying new grapes, I noticed a local store had these bizzarre looking, long, deep purple grapes. I have very small hands, and each one is about as long as my fingers!

A small human hand holding one single very, very long grape in their palm. The grape is roughly the same length as each finger. Nothing is given for scale.

While this one tastes nothing like the Cotton Candy Grape, but it's sort of its cousin! This variety was developed by International Fruit Genetics, the same fruit breeding company responsible for Cotton Candy Grapes.

But how do they taste?

I liked them a lot! They were a mellow sweetness, with a nice crispy texture that was very fun and satisfying to bite. I don't, however, particularly like them more than other, more easily available (and frankly cheaper) purple grape varieties in my area. These were at a premium markup that I'd rather do without.

Maybe if it was a special occassion. They were really good grapes after all.
